Whether Mahabharata is a myth or history maybe a matter of perspective, but the one thing it is for sure is an epic, in all sense of the word.

The little notes that Devdutt has added gives us a perspective to how the story influenced as well as got influenced by people pattanaikk various times. This was such an interesting read! With its complex situations and dual-natured characters, Mahabharata is a brilliant tale. But, all such ideas are not presented by the author for he is more ready to give his own version than what the story wanted to say.

This text is extremely focused for reading compared to the plethora of books on this topic. Also, the story can be told in parts yo make it interesting. For example, in this book the great war has been compressed into pattahaik 1 part whereas in Vyasa’s version, 4 of the 18 parvas are devoted to the war – Bhishma parva, Drona parva, Karna parva and Shalya parva.

What makes things even more complicated is the fact that Vishnu the so called supreme ruler of the world is born as a human being – Krishna, and plays a pivotal role in the whole story. At least illustrations per page, which made reading pleasanter. High above the sky stands Swarga, paradise, abode of the gods. The notion of an all-powerful God is a later development in Hindu thought. Not surprising that I retained this feeling through this book too. But these presuppose that readers or viewers know or understand the context. That is because this book focuses on something much beyond the war. Not only is the book wonderfully written, it is addictive! Its human nature to take sides in a conflict, but is it out of a sense of justice or for personal gain that we judge?

That’s why this book gets a 5-star. I am stripping a star and retracting the positive aspects of this review well, at least in statement in light of later readings.
